Al Kuhaimi SSG Plant: Plant Roof Waterproofing in Dammam

The challenge

The Al Kuhaimi SSG plant roof is a long, wide-span structure where every end lap runs the full width of the building. On a roof this size a few failed laps and a leaking ridge can spread water across a large part of the plant, and the skylights add a line of joints exposed to direct sun all day.

What ETCE did

ETCE sealed the end laps across the roof with continuous EPDM strips, covered the full ridge line with a wide EPDM run, and sealed each skylight on all four sides where the translucent sheet meets the metal. The system was bonded with Promax Bonding Adhesive, which holds at surface temperatures well above anything a Dammam summer produces.

Failure points treated on this roof

• End laps (horizontal joints)

  Horizontal sheet overlaps cleaned and closed with a continuous EPDM strip.

• Ridge & valley lines

  Ridge caps and slope junctions covered with wide EPDM runs.

• Skylights

  Translucent sheets sealed on all four sides where they meet the metal roof.

Materials & method

• EPDM membrane (1.2 mm) cut to width for each detail: UV-stable and flexible at Gulf roof temperatures.
• Promax Bonding Adhesive, rated for surface temperatures up to 120°C, for a permanent bond to the metal sheets.
• Preparation first: old coatings, failed sealant and loose rust removed so the membrane bonds to sound metal.
• Roof-side, zone-by-zone execution so the building below keeps operating with no shutdown.
• Working-at-height HSE: trained crews, full PPE and safety lifelines on every roof.

The result

The plant now has a uniformly treated roof, with a visible and inspectable EPDM line at every former weak point across laps, ridge and skylights.
