Why gutters are the first place a metal roof fails

Industrial gutters are usually built from galvanised steel sections joined end to end, with every joint sealed on site. Those joints are the weak links: the sealant hardens in the heat, the steel moves, and water gets through. In Dammam, Jubail and Al Khobar, humid, salty air attacks the gutter bed as soon as the galvanising wears thin, while inland sandstorms leave silt in the gutter that holds moisture against the steel long after the rain has passed.

Valley gutters between two roof slopes are the most critical of all, because when they overflow the water goes straight into the building. ETCE lines eave and valley gutters with EPDM bonded by Promax Bonding Adhesive across the full width, with no middle joint. With no seam down the centre, rising water in a heavy downpour has nowhere to back up, and the old joints and rust spots are sealed over in a single pass.

How we line a gutter with EPDM

1. Gutter surveyOur engineer walks the gutter runs, photographs rust, failed joints and overflow points, and notes whether each section is sound enough to line.
2. Clean out and de-rustSand, silt and debris are removed, and loose rust and failed sealant are cleaned off the gutter bed and sides.
3. Cut to the full width1.2 mm EPDM is cut to cover the gutter bed and both sides in a single width, so there is no joint down the middle.
4. Bond the liningPromax Bonding Adhesive fixes the membrane along the gutter and up to the edges of the roof sheets, sealing over the old joints.
5. Finish outlets and endsThe lining is dressed neatly into outlets and around stop ends, then inspected and photographed before handover.
