Shater Al Ebtekar Printing Services: Gutter Waterproofing in Dammam

The challenge

Printing presses and paper stock are extremely sensitive to water. At Shater Al Ebtekar the parapet box gutter was holding water against the roof edge, vent pipes through the roof had open joints, and cable penetrations through the concrete wall were letting water track inside.

What ETCE did

ETCE lined the full length of the box gutter with a single EPDM sheet turned up the parapet and under the roof sheets. Vent pipes were fitted with bonded EPDM collars, and the wall penetrations were wrapped and sealed with EPDM.

Failure points treated on this roof

• Eave, valley & box gutters

  Gutter beds lined with a jointless EPDM sheet dressed up under the roof sheets.

• Pipe & cable penetrations

  Every pipe and cable through the roof or wall sealed with a bonded EPDM collar.

• Roof-to-wall flashings & parapets

  Junctions between roof, walls, parapets and platforms sealed and turned up.

Materials & method

• EPDM membrane (1.2 mm) cut to width for each detail: UV-stable and flexible at Gulf roof temperatures.
• Promax Bonding Adhesive, rated for surface temperatures up to 120°C, for a permanent bond to the metal sheets.
• Preparation first: old coatings, failed sealant and loose rust removed so the membrane bonds to sound metal.
• Roof-side, zone-by-zone execution so the building below keeps operating with no shutdown.
• Working-at-height HSE: trained crews, full PPE and safety lifelines on every roof.

The result

Water now leaves the roof through the gutter as designed, and every penetration above the press hall is sealed.
